Verdicts & Settlements
John C. Ambrose
During his distinguished career, Mr. Ambrose and the attorneys represented injured clients and families of those who died in a wide range of accidents resulting from someone’s negligence or irresponsible behavior. His firm has a long track record of successful and often record-setting verdicts and settlements, serving clients in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Kendall and Wills Counties and across Illinois. The following are
examples of some of the notable cases his firm handled over the years:
$5,200,000 – Partial Verdict & Settlement – A truck driver lost control of his tractor trailer and crashed into a van causing devastating injuries to the passenger. The trial took place in Wyoming, where the truck accident occurred. This truck accident recovery was one of the largest verdicts in that jurisdiction’s history.
$5,100,000 Verdict – A verdict was awarded to a jogger who was struck by a security guard within an international crosswalk in front of University of Illinois-Chicago. This Chicago car accident caused substantial brain damage and permanent short-term memory problems for the jogger.
$4,700,001 Verdict – This jury verdict was rendered on behalf of a company that was harmed by an Illinois Bank. The jury held that the bank had breached a lending agreement and determined that this breach caused over $4.7 million dollars in damage.
$3,000,000 Verdict – An unlicensed truck driver crushed a man to death between the truck and a milk trailer. The driver argued this truck accident was the man’s fault because at the time of death his toxicological blood screen revealed ten times the therapeutic dose of morphine in his body. This Chicago wrongful death verdict was awarded to the unmarried man’s 14 surviving children from two separate mothers.
$2,450,000 Verdict – A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed when a South African worker mistakenly drove on the wrong side of the road and collided head on with her vehicle. The Will County car accident also seriously injured the woman’s husband. A federal court wrongful death verdict was awarded to the woman’s husband and two minor children.
$2,300,000 Verdict – A man was paralyzed due to a doctor’s failure to remove a disc fragment in his cervical spine during a back operation. Prior to the medical malpractice trial, a settlement was reached with the hospital for an additional $500,000.00. The case went up to the Illinois Appellate Court on three separate occasions. One of those landmark decisions solidified the doctrine of apparent agency in medical malpractice cases against hospitals.
$1,500,000 Verdict – A Chicago wrongful death lawsuit was tried before a jury against two officers who shot and killed a man based on a mistaken identification. The officers contended the man tried to run them over with his car when they approached him for questioning about a robbery. The verdict was upheld on appeal in the Illinois Appellate Court.
$1,200,000 – Settlement Just Before Picking a Jury – A Salvation Army truck driven by a two time convicted felon took a turn too sharp and hit a 35 year old City of Chicago Streets and Sanatation Worker in the back. As a result the man sustained two herniated discs in his mid back requiring back surgery.
$2,200,000 Verdict – A man was rendered quadriplegic after two men driving and drinking hit his motorcycle. A keg of beer was in the back seat of their car. The drunk driver crossed the centerline of a rural Wisconsin road and crashed into the 22-year old motorcyclist. This federal court car accident trial was one of the largest verdicts in that jurisdiction’s history. After years of collection work, the man finally recovered a large majority of the verdict.
$1,500,000 Verdict – A Chicago wrongful death verdict was entered against a local transit authority stemming from the brutal rape and stabbing murder of a local medical student at a train station. This landmark case was affirmed on appeal in the Illinois Appellate Court, which held that the transit authority was liable for the criminal acts of an unknown assailant because it knew of the unsafe condition of the station.
$1,500,000 Partial Verdict and Partial Settlement – Justice was served for 26 computer programmers who were not paid overtime benefits as required by law under the Fair Labor Standards Act. This landmark case prompted the legislature to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to include computer programmers as exempt from receiving overtime compensation.
$1,250,000 Settlement – A Cook County wrongful death lawsuit brought against police officers who fired tear gas into a basement window of a man who ran into his house during a traffic stop. The tear gas caused burns to over 90 percent of his body, which eventually killed the man. A settlement was reached on behalf of his wife and minor child.
$1,200,000 Verdict – A Cook County wrongful death verdict was entered in favor of a motorcyclist who was hit by an SUV turning into a restaurant. The driver admitted he did not see the motorcyclist before the car accident, which caused the young man’s death.
$1,200,000 Verdict – A federal court jury verdict was entered against a truck driver for the serious and debilitating personal injuries sustained by a firefighter when the tractor trailer lost control on the expressway. This Chicago highway truck accident was tried and the money was paid in just over a year after the collision.
